6. WORKSHOP: Compromiso: la clave para la comunicación con la población indígena

Dirigido por Michael Duffy y Peter Thomsen

COMMITMENT: ENGAGEMENT: THE KEY TO COMMUNICATING WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Peter Thomsen and Michael Duffy

Peter Thomsen is a Butchulla-Gunavidji man whose country is Fraser Island and Maningrida. He is the manager-cameraman-editor of the audio-visual unit at the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin Australia and Chair of the Aboriginal Ethics Sub-committee of the NT Human Research Ethics Committee.

Michael Duffy is an immigrant Australian of Irish-Scots descent who coordinates dissemination and communications - from publishing to public affairs and everything in between - for the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health, also in Darwin. A former journalist, he was worked in Aboriginal domains for 20 years.

Our experience in the field tells us that learning techniques for cross-cultural communication alone will not help communicators work better with Indigenous peoples. And good intentions are never a substitute for good process.

This workshop examines through case study, anecdote, readings and other presentations:
* the need for majority cultures to reflect on their behaviours and attitudes before entering Indigenous domains
* the importance of negotiating meaning and intent before embarking on a venture such as a communications/dissemination program
* the need to learn as much as to instruct in communication exchanges
* the need for reflection on our learnings.

We recommend participants read 'Yarning about research with Indigenous peoples: A workshop report' and Peter's paper 'Using your senses...to make sense'. Both are available at
http://www.crcah.org.au in the Digital Library. Click on Digital Library and enter title in search box. Follow instructions for rapid download
